A woman and her young daughter came to see me about becoming a client. She had been rear-ended at a busy intersection by a careless driver, and both she and her daughter were hurt. They met with the friendly adjuster from the at-fault party’s insurance company, who truly seemed to care about them. He asked lots of questions, seemed concerned when they described the crash and how they were injured. Then he offered my client $500 “for your inconvenience” – and as a nice gesture, threw in another $100 for her two-year-old daughter.
$600 for injuries that already had cost my client almost $1,500 in emergency room charges? And only $100 of that for her child? These insurance companies will stop at nothing to plump up their bottom lines, including offering a tiny little check to someone who obviously deserves a lot more.
My client told the adjuster to forget his puny offer, that she was going to hire the Law Offices of Dianne Sawaya. The adjuster told her she didn’t need to hire an attorney, that the insurance company would take care of her and getting an attorney involved would only delay getting her money.
Of course he would say that. Insurance companies don’t want to have an attorney involved. Their own industry studies show that an attorney on average gets an injured client 3-4 times more than they would without an attorney. That’s a no-brainer. I’ve never seen a personal injury case where you don’t need an attorney. If some insurance company says skip an attorney, run – don’t walk – out of their office and give me a call.
